Creating and using audiences
An audience is a group of visitors defined by rules, for example "visitors from Germany on a smartphone" or "visitors who came from Google to the pricing page". You create an audience once and then use it in other parts of Strabber:
- Surveys: show a survey only to visitors in an audience, or only to visitors outside it.
- Events: trigger an event automatically when a visitor is in an audience, or isn't.
- Heatmaps: build a heatmap from the visits of visitors in an audience, or outside it.
Create an audience
- Open Audiences and click Create audience.
- Enter an Audience name and click Create.
- Add filters that describe the visitors you want (see below).
- Turn on State to activate the audience.
- Click Save changes.
An audience needs at least one filter before you can enable it.
Add filters
Click Add filter and choose the Filter type. Then pick a condition, enter a value and add more values if you need them.
| Group | Filter | What it checks |
|---|---|---|
| Session | Page | The URL of the page the visitor is on. |
| Session | Source | The URL the visitor came from. |
| Session | Date | The date of the visit. |
| Environment | Browser | The browser name, such as Chrome or Edge. |
| Environment | Browser version | The browser version. |
| Environment | Operating system | The operating system name. |
| Environment | OS version | The operating system version. |
| Environment | Device | Desktop, smartphone or tablet. |
| Environment | User agent | The browser's full user agent string. |
| Geolocation | Country | The visitor's country. |
| Geolocation | City | The visitor's city. |
| Geolocation | IP address | The visitor's IP address. |
Text filters, such as Page or Browser, support conditions like Is equal to, Contains, Starts with and Ends with, and their opposites. Device, Country and IP address use Is equal to or Is not equal to. Date uses Is equal to, Is not equal to, Is after or Is before.
For example, to target visitors reading your blog, add a Page filter with the condition Starts with and the value https://example.com/blog/.
To remove a filter, click Delete filter.
Match all or any conditions
The Match setting decides how the conditions combine:
- All: a visitor is in the audience only if they match every condition.
- Any: a visitor is in the audience if they match at least one condition.
Match applies to every value you add, including several values in the same filter. For example, with All, a Country filter with both "Germany" and "France" can never match, because no visitor is in both countries at once. To target visitors from either country, set Match to Any, or create a separate audience for each country.
If you need "this and one of these", it's often easier to combine an audience with the targeting options of the survey, event or heatmap. For example, use a survey's Devices setting for the device, and the audience for the countries.
Enable or disable an audience
The State switch activates or deactivates the audience. When you use a disabled audience in a survey or an event, Strabber shows a warning there with a link to the audience settings.
Use an audience
- In a survey: in the survey's Targeting settings, set Traffic to Visitors in audience or Visitors not in audience and choose the audience.
- In an event: set the event's Type to In audience or Not in audience and choose the audience. The event is triggered automatically when a visitor matches, or doesn't match, the audience. No code is needed.
- In a heatmap: when you create the heatmap, set Type to In audience or Not in audience and choose the audience. The heatmap then only includes visits that match, or don't match, it.
Manage audiences
The Audiences page lists all audiences with their name, status and creation date. The sidebar groups them into Active and Inactive. Each audience's page shows a Summary with its Audience ID, Status and creation date.
From the menu of an audience, on its page or in the list, you can:
- Clone it, creating a copy with the same filters. The copy starts disabled.
- Delete it.
Before you delete an audience, check whether any surveys, events or heatmaps use it.
