Browsing recordings

Updated

The Recordings page lists every recorded session on your site, newest first. From here you can search and filter sessions, choose which details the table shows, and open any recording in the player.

The recordings table

Each row is one recorded session. Click the play button at the start of a row to watch it.

Some parts of a row are always shown:

  • Checkbox to select the recording for bulk actions.
  • Status dot. A dot means you haven't watched the recording yet; click it to mark the recording as viewed. A separate indicator shows when the user is still browsing your site and the recording is still in progress.
  • Favorite star to add the recording to your favorites.
  • Notes icon, shown when the recording has notes.
  • Markers that highlight what happened in the session: script errors, console errors, rage clicks, an identified user, triggered events, and a completed or partially completed survey. Hover over a marker to see the details, such as the number of errors.
  • Row menu (⋯) at the end of the row, with actions such as marking the recording as viewed, excluding its IP address, country or ISP from future recordings (see Traffic filters), and deleting it.

The remaining columns can be turned on or off:

Column What it shows
Date When the session was recorded.
User The user identifier, if you identify users on your site.
UUID The visitor's unique ID.
Scores The session's activity score. A score of 5 or more is highlighted as an active session.
Tags Tags you've added to the recording.
Source Where the visitor came from, such as a search engine or another website.
Duration How long the session lasted.
Location The visitor's country, city and IP address.
ISP The visitor's internet service provider.
Landing and exit pages The first and last page the visitor viewed.
Number of pages How many pages the visitor viewed.
Environment The visitor's browser, operating system and device type.

To sort the table, click a column header. Date, User, UUID, Source, Duration, ISP and Number of pages can be sorted.

Show and hide columns

  1. Click Columns above the table.
  2. Check a column to show it, or uncheck it to hide it. The table updates straight away.

All columns are shown by default except User and UUID. Your choice is saved to your account, so the table looks the same the next time you open it.

Search recordings

When no filters are applied, a search box appears above the table. Type at least three characters to search. The search looks through details such as the user identifier, UUID, tags, browser, operating system, device, country, city, ISP, IP address, exit page, UTM source and console messages.

Filter recordings

Click Filters above the table to open the filter panel. Filters are grouped by what they describe:

  • Recording: tag, dates, source URL, duration, number of pages, page URL, landing page URL, exit page URL and activity score.
  • User: UUID, user identifier and user name.
  • UTM parameters: source, medium, campaign, term and content.
  • Environment: browser name and version, OS name and version, device and user agent.
  • Location: country, city, ISP and IP address.
  • Events: event, event nature and number of rage clicks.
  • Console: log message, log type, script URL, and the number of script errors and of error, log, info, debug and warning messages.

Choose a filter, set its condition (for example Is equal to, Contains or Is greater than) and apply it. The applied filters appear above the table, and the list updates to show only matching recordings.

Quick filters

The top of the filter panel has two shortcuts:

  • With activity only shows recordings with an activity score greater than 5.
  • Engaged users only shows recordings where the visitor viewed more than one page.

Filter from the table

You don't have to open the filter panel to filter. Click a value in the table, such as a user, source, country, ISP, browser or landing page, and choose With this… to show only matching recordings, or Without this… to hide them. For the number of pages, you can also show recordings with more or fewer pages.

Combine filters

When you apply more than one filter, the word between them shows how they combine. Click and or or to switch between them:

  • and shows recordings that match every filter.
  • or shows recordings that match any of them.

For more complex searches, click New scope to start a separate group of filters. Groups combine with each other in the same way, so you can build searches such as (country is Germany and device is smartphone) or (has script errors).

Click Reset to remove all filters.

Save a filter

If you use the same filters often, save them:

  1. Apply the filters you want.
  2. Click the ⋯ menu next to the filters and choose Save filter.
  3. Enter a name and save.

Saved filters are listed at the top of the filter panel. Click one to apply it. From the same ⋯ menu you can also rename or delete the saved filter you're using.

Other ways to narrow the list

The controls above the table also let you:

  • Show All, Viewed or Not viewed recordings.
  • Turn on Display favorites only.
  • Click Refresh to load new recordings.
  • Choose how many rows to show on each page: 10, 25, 50, 100, 150 or 200.

Work with several recordings

Select recordings with the checkboxes, or use the checkbox in the header to select all of them on the page. You can then:

  • Mark as viewed
  • Add tags
  • Delete selected

The ⋯ menu at the top right of the table also has Mark all as viewed and Delete all recordings, which apply to every recording on the site. Deleting recordings can't be undone.
