Using surveys

Updated

Surveys let you ask visitors questions directly on your website, so you can learn why they act the way they do. A survey shows up as a small label at the side of the page that visitors can click to open it. You can also open it automatically, for example when a visitor is about to leave.

Each response is linked to the visitor's session recording, so you can watch what a visitor did before and after answering.

Create a survey

  1. Open Surveys and click Create survey.
  2. Enter a Name for the survey. Only your team sees it.
  3. Click Create.

Generate a survey with AI

Instead of writing the questions yourself, you can let AI draft the survey for you. In the New survey window, check Generate survey with AI and fill in:

  • Theme: what your website or the survey is about.
  • Goal: what you want to learn. Click a suggestion, such as Find usability problems, Find out why users abandoning, Test new design, Measure user satisfaction level or Know how customers discovered brand, or write your own.
  • Questions: how many questions to generate, from 1 to 10.

Click Create. Strabber generates the questions, and you can edit them before publishing the survey.

Add questions

The survey editor shows a live preview of the survey next to your questions and settings, so you can see how it will look as you edit it.

Click Add question, enter the question and choose its Type:

Type What the visitor does
One option Chooses one answer from a list.
Multiple options Chooses one or more answers from a list.
Score (CSAT) Rates their satisfaction from 1 to 5 stars, from "Worse" to "Better".
Score (NPS) Rates how likely they are to recommend you, from 1 to 10.
Text string Types a short answer.
Text box Types a longer answer.

For One option and Multiple options, click Add option to add each answer.

For each question you can also:

  • Turn on Required so visitors can't skip it.
  • Turn off Enabled to hide the question without deleting it.
  • Use Move backward and Move forward to change the order of questions.
  • Click Delete question to remove it.

A survey needs at least one question before you can publish it.

Configure the survey

The settings next to the questions are grouped into four sections.

Content

  • Title: shown at the top of the survey.
  • Description: shown under the title.
  • Thank you: the message visitors see after they complete the survey.

Appearance

  • Style: Light, Dark, or System to follow the visitor's device setting.
  • Color scheme: the survey's main color, so it matches your website.
  • Label position: whether the label that opens the survey sits on the Left or Right side of the page.
  • Label caption: the text on that label.

Targeting

  • Devices: show the survey on Desktops, Smartphones, Tablets, or any combination.
  • Traffic: show the survey to All visitors, to Visitors in audience or to Visitors not in audience.
  • Audience: when you target an audience, choose which one. If the audience is disabled, enable it first, or the survey won't use it.

Triggers

By default, visitors open the survey by clicking its label. Triggers open it automatically:

  • Exit intent: shows the survey when the visitor is about to leave the page.
  • Time-based trigger: shows the survey after the visitor has spent a set amount of time on your website. Use the slider to choose the delay, from 1 second up to 3 hours.

Click Save changes to save your settings, or Cancel to discard them.

Publish the survey

New surveys are inactive, so visitors don't see them until you're ready. When the survey is set up, turn on its Status switch to show it on your website. Turn it off again to hide it.

Deactivate a survey before you make big changes to it, so visitors don't see a half-edited version.

The sidebar of the Surveys page lists your surveys in two groups, Active and Inactive. The number of active surveys you can have depends on your plan.

Review responses

The Surveys page shows each survey's state, when it was created, the number of responses, and how many of them are new. Click View results to open a survey's responses.

Each response shows:

  • When it was submitted, and whether it's New.
  • The page the visitor was on.
  • The visitor's environment: browser, operating system and device.
  • Their answer to each question, or Skipped if they didn't answer it.

Click View recording to watch the session of the visitor who answered. This shows you what the visitor did before they answered, which often explains why they answered the way they did.

In the recordings list, sessions with a completed survey are marked with a survey icon, and partially completed surveys show how much of the survey the visitor answered.

Manage responses

  • Refresh loads new responses.
  • Select responses and click Delete selected to remove them.
  • Erase all results deletes every response to the survey.
  • Edit survey takes you back to the survey editor.

Deleted responses can't be recovered.

Clone or delete a survey

  • Clone creates a copy of a survey with the same questions and settings. It's a quick way to run a similar survey on another part of your website.
  • Delete removes the survey and all of its responses permanently.

Both are available from the menu in the survey editor and from the menu of each survey in the list.
