Reviewing a recording
Open a recording from the recordings list by clicking its play button. The recording opens in the Strabber player, which replays the session the way the visitor experienced it: their mouse movements, clicks, scrolling, typing and the pages they visited.
The player has four parts:
- Screen: the replay itself, in the middle.
- Toolbar: playback controls and the progress bar, below the screen.
- Sidebar: details about the session and the visitor.
- Timeline: a step-by-step list of what happened in the session.
You can show or hide the sidebar and the timeline from the toolbar, and switch to full screen.
Playback controls
The toolbar has:
- Play / Pause, and Replay once the recording ends.
- 10 seconds backward and 10 seconds forward.
- Playback speed from 1X to 5X.
- Skip inactivity. When it's on, the player skips the parts of the session where the visitor did nothing, so you only watch the activity.
- Mute / Unmute for the sounds the replay plays on mouse clicks, key presses and page changes.
The progress bar
The progress bar shows the whole session. Periods of activity and inactivity are marked on it, and hovering over a section shows how long it lasted. Click anywhere on the bar to jump to that moment.
Above the progress bar, markers show key events: rage clicks, console messages and script errors, custom events and your notes. You can turn each type of marker on or off from the toolbar. Hover over a marker to see what happened there, then:
- Play from here jumps to the event.
- Play from 5 s before jumps to just before it, so you can see what led up to it.
- Open console opens the console at that moment (for errors and console messages).
- Add note adds a note at that moment.
The screen
The screen shows the page the visitor was on. Above the replay you can see the page's address, and:
- Previous page and Next page jump between the pages the visitor viewed.
- Open in new tab opens the current page of your website.
- Generate heatmap creates a heatmap for the current page.
A label on the screen shows what the visitor is doing at that moment, such as scrolling, clicking, typing or being inactive. It also shows when the mouse leaves the browser window.
"Webpage was not transmitted to Strabber"
Sometimes a page in a recording can't be shown. This can happen when:
- The visitor had a slow internet connection.
- The visitor left the page very quickly.
- A browser extension changed the page's HTML structure.
The sidebar
The sidebar shows information about the session in sections. Click a section's name to collapse or expand it. To reorder the sections, click and hold a section's name, then drag it.
- User: the visitor's UUID, plus the user's identifier and name if you identify users on your site.
- Session: ID, duration, IP address, country and city, ISP, source, the number of pages, mouse clicks and key presses, rage clicks and issues.
- Environment: browser, operating system, device and user agent.
- Pages: every page the visitor viewed, in order, with the time they opened it, how long they stayed and the page's activity score. Icons show which pages had script errors, console messages, rage clicks or events. Click a page to jump to it in the replay.
- Events: the custom events triggered during the session.
- Notes: the notes added to the recording.
The sidebar also has controls for the recording:
- Tags: click Add tag to tag the recording. Click a tag to remove it.
- Mark as viewed / Mark as not viewed
- Add to favorites / Remove from favorites
- Copy recording URL
- Delete recording. This can't be undone.
- Previous recording and Next recording move through the recordings list.
- Previous recording of this user and Next recording of this user move through other sessions by the same visitor.
The timeline
The timeline lists the session as a series of steps: session start, page views, clicking, typing, scrolling, rage clicks, issues and session end. Each step shows when it happened and how long it lasted, for example "12 clicks in 40 sec".
- Use the buttons at the top to show only Clicks, Typing, Scrolling, Pages or Issues, or All steps.
- Type in Search across timeline... to find a specific step.
- Click a step to jump to it in the replay.
- Turn on Follow to keep the timeline scrolled to the current moment as the recording plays.
- Use Expand all and Collapse all to show or hide the details of every step.
The console
Click Display console in the toolbar to open the console below the screen. It shows technical details of the session, synchronized with the replay. The console has four tabs:
- Logs: console messages from the visitor's browser: log, error, warning, debug and info. You can search the messages and filter them by type. For any message you can copy it, search for it on Google or ask ChatGPT about it.
- DOM Events: mouse and keyboard events, with the element that received each one and the mouse coordinates. You can copy the path of an element.
- Issues: script errors, console errors and failed network requests, with the message and the file they came from.
- Network: the requests the page made, with the method, URL, status, duration and a waterfall chart. You can filter requests by errors, status and method.
By default, each tab shows entries up to the current moment of the replay. Turn on Show entire session to see all entries at once, and Autoscroll to keep the newest entry in view as the recording plays.
Notes
Notes let you mark important moments for yourself and your team.
- Pause the recording at the moment you want to note, or hover over a marker on the progress bar.
- Click Add note.
- Enter the note and click Save.
Notes appear as markers on the progress bar and in the Notes section of the sidebar. Recordings with notes show a notes icon in the recordings list.
Share a recording
- Copy recording URL at current time in the toolbar copies a link that opens the recording at the moment you're watching.
- Share recording creates a secure link to the recording. Anyone with the link can watch the recording, so share it with care.
